What a spot for a block of flats. Solid rock foundations - why, we could go as high as 6 stories.  I mean, how many people actually use the rowing club? Not many, I bet. And we would get a real good price for it to spend wisely.

This one is even better. Look at the graffiti on it. We would be doing the community a favour if we built high rise here. It faces north, it is actually on the river bank and has great views - what a waste. Sea scouts and dragon boats, good heavens,  can they really stand in the way of progress??  And think of the money we would make.

Why stop there? Look at Paringa Park. Solid rock, right on the river bank, you could actually fish from it. 10 minute walk to town if you run like hell all the way. Very close to the Entertainment Centre. This is the jewel in the crown.

And what about this little beauty? This is the Husky Pool and we are doing a lot of development there. Look at the views - incredible! We can go to four and a half or five stories here. We could make millions.  And what is the point of have a pool near the ocean? Eh? Waste of time. No, the Husky pool is next. Give me one good reason why not.

Who's next?

Well, have a look at

The Rowing Club Building and

The Sea Scouts Hall

Ben's Walk

Paringa Park.

Are these wonderful places to sell to a developer for a block of units? Of course they are.

Think it is impossible??

Is the thought any more impossible than it would have been when our pool was built?

If selling off a pool...

which teaches children to swim, and be accustomed to water, and even enables them one day to save someone's life,

if the fact that we are a nation of swimmers and fishers at some time in our life and need training to prevent drowning tragedies,

if the fact that the whole community has an interest in water safety and needs a community pool ....

then what chance does

a tennis court, Bens's Walk

a cricket ground, the sea scouts

a golf club, Paringa park

a croquet lawn, rowing club

have when the Council gets stars in its eyes about raising money by selling off community land?

Rights and freedoms, likewise commons and community lands are not lost in a single moment. They get lost bit by bit.

Who's next indeed?? Is it Paringa?

Remember, the so-far secret plan is to redevelop from the hospital, down to the highway and across Riverview Road to Ferry Lane. The entire riverbank.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Poem by Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of  targets, group after group.
