Hello everyone,

Our Save Nowra Pool meeting was held on Thursday 25th March.

We now know that the riverfront pool site land has been ruled out for any commercial development due to the low lying nature of the land.

Taking into the details below, our new way forward in brief is:

·        REVITALISE THE RIVERFRONT (pool, children’s water park, cafe, restaurant, kiosk, function room, park, markets, entertainment, car parking, etc – these are just some ideas)

·       REBUILD NOWRA POOL ON CURRENT SITE

·      NO MORE EXCUSES

There are a number of important things that everyone should be aware of that were discussed at the meeting. A summary is as follows:

·         We now know that the riverfront pool site land has been ruled out for any commercial development due to the low lying nature of the land. That means there will be not be a hotel, shops, or any other similar commercial development on the land. It is believed the recommendation will be to retain the land with a community classification. A community classification means that the land cannot be sold. Ironically, two of the parcels of land were resumed by Council in 1948 to “protect the low lying land”.

·         While this is excellent news, it is believed the master planners (on direction from Council) are looking at options for the best use of the community land ie, one option would be to fill the pool in and replace with a park.

·         We need to start driving the revitalisation of the riverfront. There is no reason why the pool can’t be rebuilt on its current site as part of the community land. The area could be bustling with a great all year round pool facility, promoting healthy lifestyle options for residents and tourists and increasing options for our community. The facility could also include a restaurant, cafe, kiosk, waterpark, etc. There is also ample room for markets, other entertainment, cycle ways, a park and increased car parking.

·         A new and comprehensive marketing campaign is going to commence along these themes. Expect to see media releases, radio interviews, small flyers, posters, banners, etc. These are currently being developed. More details will be provided as these are developed.

·         There is still a lot of behind the scenes work going on, eg, getting costings of upgrades of 50m pools, etc.

How You Can Help

·         Write, email, text or phone councillors and tell them the information highlighted in red. If you need to choose Councillors, please direct your energies to Mayor Paul Green, Deputy Mayor Gareth Ward, Clr Andrew Guile, Clr Bohdan Brumerskyj, Clr David Bennett, Clr Nigel Soames, Clr Robert Miller and Clr John Fergusson. Contact details are attached. Please also write to the editor of the South Coast Register – contact details are also attached.

·         Talk with as many people as you can about our new direction and that we need to revitalise the riverfront and the rebuilding of Nowra Pool is central to this revitalisation. Encourage as many people as possible to contact councillors and the media (and the Nowra Chamber of Commerce). We can win this now by considerable community pressure, particularly on Councillors.

·         Help distribute marketing material when it is developed.

Thank you for your support. I think together we can win this!
